BOOKS/Magazines ABOUT MAGDALENA Most available at Emporium 404; some at The Marketplace and Route 60 Trading Post. Soon all at the Magdalena Public Library

" Celebrating 100 Years of Frontier Living Magdalena NM 1884-1984 Trails End" Old photographs, art work. Man "old timers" contributed their stories and pictures. Chapters include: Magdalena before 1884; Magdalena Marshalls [sic]; Rodeo, Forest Service, Mining and the Miners; Hispanic Magdalena; Sheep Ranching and the Wool Market; Magdalena Stock Driveway.

"Cowboy Spur Maker From True West:" Tom Kelly with Jane Pattie. Valuable to scholars, novelists, and the rest of us who relish Old West history... From Buffalo Bill Historical Society> "Crisp writing with understatement and humor captures the essence of the oral tradition and the cowboy way of 'spinning a yard. A believable human portrait." This book could be described as two autobiographies without stretching the term too far. Better yet, as a form of oral history. It is about Ed Blanchard, turned spurmaker after a wild, reckless life as a cowboy, as known by Tom Kelly, his cousin. Mr. Kelly is an "old timer" here in Magdalena NM who still ranches.

"Heaven is Under our Feet" by local resident Sonja Stalnaker. "Many of the poems and photographs in my book were inspired by and taken in the Magdalena area." Signed copies soon to be available at Emporium 404 and at the Library

The Kelly Cookbook. By the Editors from the book: "In 1911 the Ladies Aid Society of Kelly published a cookbook with the help of twenty-five advertisers and Sherman & Edwards Printers of Magdalena. There is no record of what the money was used for but most likely to help some miners family. In 1981 the cookbook is being republished. Christina MacTavish Blackburn has given permission for her mother's copy to be reprinted. Karo Syrup, the only original advertiser still in business, has helped with publishing costs. Profits from the cookbook will help maintain and improve the Magdalena Senior Citizens Program. Over the years Kelly has contributed a great deal to the Magdalena area: families, building materials, money and a plenitude of stories. Now the Kelly Ladies Aid Society reaches across 70 years to continue to enrich the community." The full-page Karo ad on the inside back cover has the Karo Fudge recipe in it. Three black and white drawings of the Kelly Mine area.

"Old Magdalena Cow Town" by late resident Langford Ryan Johnston

"Querencia is one of 15 books" by Steve Bodio, local author.  "Hounds of Heaven" is set in Magdalena with a trip to Asia in the middle. "Edge of the Wild" is half about Magdalena. "A Rage for Falcons" and "Eternity of Eagles" some. "Querencia," from the Spanish term meaning “the heart’s true home," captivates and settles the heart. An astonishing read for those looking for an escape from the hustle of the big city or seeking to find solitude in the country life. Steve wandered here in the 1970s with a woman companion and never left. They led a simple life of hunting, falconry, and became acquainted with the local reptiles and insects of the desert. He explains in vivid detail time spent in the wilderness and his endless fascination with the local fauna, from snakes and birds and his own coursing dogs.

Rodeo in Magdalena. JULY 4, 1918. Frontier Times July 1976. "Three Roads to Magdalena" by David Wallace Adams. A historical look at the multi-cultural heritage of Magdalena.

"The Train Stops Here New Mexico's Railway Legacy. " The Index has eight references to Magdalena and two to the Magdalena Stock Driveway

"Vanishing Act," a book of poetry by Bruce Holsapple about New Mexico and Magdalena.

"Wayward Shadow," poems written in Magdalena's Hop Canyon by Bruce Holsapple.

Wrangler Meets His Queen. July, 1966. Golden West Magazine: True Stories of the Old West. Milt Hinkle, a champion contender on the rodeo circuit and at one time I was the law in Magdalena, Discusses 1916 Magdalena Rodeo pgs. 34-35. Includes: Magdalena was a big show, lots of top hands there. Oh Magdalena was a wild little cow town on a branch line with one train daily from Socorro. Contestants, cowboys and ranchers had already started pouring into town. Most brought their cow wagons.î Also includes: The Great Newspaper Race, The Cougar, The Last of the Buffalo, Charlie Miller, last of the Pony Express Riders and much more. Many attractive illustrations. Attractive cover (Native Americans on horses by railroad tracks: Trail of the Iron Horse by Charles M. Russell.)

KELLY MINE During its heyday in the 1800s, the Kelly mine produced nearly $60 million in gold, lead, zinc and cooper. It is known for the most famous deposits of Smithsonite in the world notable for both their startling forms and unbelievable color. The intense green-blue of Smithsonite from this locality is essentially unique. Passes available from Bennie Zamora (575-854-2401) Tony's Rock Shop, Kelly Rd. on way to the mine. Bruce Holsapple Poet Bruce Holsapple has written two books about living in Magdalena--Vanishing Act and Wayward Shadow—and he promises a third book soon. His poems are silly, dense, sly, and emotional. Many were written in Magdalena's Hop Canyon and delight in details like wood stoves, wild flowers, broken shoe laces, and washing dishes. He sometimes reads them at the library. His themes involve small town life (and loves) and hiking in the mountains hereabouts, the Magdalenas, San Mateos, Manzanos and Bear Mountains. Bruce also worked in Magdalena Municipal Schools as our Speech-Language Pathologist. His scholarly book on the poetry of William Carlos Williams will be published by the University of New Mexico Press in December 2016.

Tom Kelly A beloved "Old Timer" who knows Magdalena history because he and his relatives lived it. Still ranches at ....years. In collaboration with
